Chicago Med’s Jessy Schram Teases More ‘Roadblocks’ for Hannah and Archer

Dr. Hannah Asher’s pregnancy is no longer a secret on Chicago Med — the whole hospital knows Dr. Dean Archer is the father — but actress Jessy Schram warns their road to parenthood is still rocky at best.

“I think we’re only starting to scratch the surface on the roadblocks,” Schram, 39, exclusively told Us Weekly of how season 11 will continue to unfold for her character, Hannah, and Steven Weber‘s Archer, whose personal relationship is anything but normal.

Schram noted that Hannah isn’t super far along in her pregnancy, so her relationship with Archer will continue to ebb and flow.

“They’re not in a committed relationship. These are two friends that are having the baby, and honestly, what could possibly go wrong about two friends having a baby?” Schram said with a laugh, teasing that “feelings on all different levels” will muddy the waters between the doctors.

Schram explained that once Hannah accepted that she was “going to be a single mom” after discovering her pregnancy in season 10. However, Hannah told Archer about the baby’s paternity — which happened because of a one-night stand between friends who needed to lean on each other — because it was “the right thing to do.”

“She was planning to have this baby no matter what. And now that he’s involved, that’s great, but I think we forget that there’s emotions [as a result],” Schram said of the pair’s choice to coparent while trying to remain platonic. “There’s a tug of war that happens at different times, and I think they have to deal with their age difference, but they just also have to deal with being two people that have emotions, and have to go through all of it while having a baby come into the world.”

TV Stars Who Disliked a Potential Romance for Their Character

Although Hannah has made it clear throughout season 11 that she and Archer are just friends, Schram hinted that those lines may blur as they prepare for their baby’s arrival.

“That’s what we’re going to be discovering as the season unfolds,” she told Us. “What does their relationship mean? What does that look like for them at different moments in time? It’s definitely not just a cookie-cutter stamp of they’re platonic [and] this is done. But also not, ‘Oh, we’re having a baby, let’s get together.’”

Hannah and Archer’s partnership will also be tested when their families get involved, according to Schram.

We’ll see her sister, and we will meet Hannah’s father, who is not a fan of this coparenting situation,” she revealed, adding that Hannah’s sister Lizzy (Erin Anderson) won’t be easy to sway either.

Schram revealed that Hannah and Lizzy are “still at odds” when she makes her first cameo this season. Lizzy asked Hannah to be her surrogate, but she had to drop out because of her own pregnancy bombshell.

“Lizzy’s still taking it pretty hard and Hannah is just hoping that she can come back to her. Hoping that she [will] not be alone with raising this baby,” Schram explained. “Hannah’s dealing with so many emotions, and feeling alone is definitely one of them.”

The actress told Us that Hannah won’t be the only one receiving judgment from loved ones about the pregnancy. Archer’s son, Sean (Luigi Sottile), will return this season and won’t be afraid to speak his mind on the situation.

Chicago Med’s Steven Weber Calls Archer and Hannah's Baby Plot Twist 'Gutsy'

“Sean will be back, and Sean will have a reaction,” Schram said with a laugh. “We do encounter him, and he’s definitely part of the journey of how Archer behaves and doesn’t behave.”

Even with all the criticism from outsiders, Schram told Us that she’s excited to see Hannah and Archer’s parenting styles.

“I already know that Dean will be a softie when it comes to the baby. I already know that everything that we see in the hospital will just diminish the second he looks into a baby’s eyes,” she mused. “For Hannah, I feel like she’ll probably take on the role of [reading] too much literature on how to do everything right for the baby.”

Chicago Med airs on NBC Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET.
